Applied AI Product Engineer – Contract

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Applied AI Product Engineer to join an innovative, technology-driven environment on an initial 6-month contract.

This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on engineer to design, build and deliver AI-powered products, internal tools and integrations that improve how teams work.

You will take ownership of solutions from initial concept through to production, working closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders to turn complex challenges into scalable, reliable products.

The role combines software engineering, applied AI, product development and automation, with a strong focus on building practical solutions that deliver measurable business value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test and deploy end-to-end internal products, APIs, integrations and data workflows.

  • Build and enhance AI-powered tools, evaluation frameworks and automation solutions.

  • Translate ambiguous business requirements into clear technical solutions.

  • Transform manual processes and one-off prototypes into scalable, reusable self-service tools.

  • Develop robust backend services, integrations and data pipelines.

  • Implement best practices across automated testing, monitoring, observability and error handling.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather feedback and continuously improve products.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining high engineering standards.

  • Measure product effectiveness through adoption, performance and operational efficiency.

  • Produce clear technical documentation and support the adoption of new tools and capabilities.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 6+ years of commercial software engineering experience, ideally across product engineering, backend development, full-stack engineering or ML engineering.

  • Proven experience independently delivering production-ready software from design through to deployment.

  • Strong programming experience in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, PHP, C++ or similar languages.

  • Hands-on experience developing and integrating APIs, backend services, data workflows or full-stack applications.

  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing, debugging, monitoring and production support.

  • Ability to translate complex or ambiguous requirements into practical technical solutions.

  • Strong product mindset, with an understanding of user needs and business outcomes.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience using data and metrics to assess product performance and identify improvements.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience developing or integrating AI/ML-powered applications, LLMs or agentic AI workflows.

  • Knowledge of AI evaluation frameworks, feedback loops and model performance assessment.

  • Experience building internal developer tools, platforms or self-service solutions.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools and responsible AI development practices.

  • Experience improving operational workflows through automation and AI.

  • Exposure to product roadmaps, user research and iterative product development.
