✨🌈 This year we are highlighting LGBTQIA+ global leaders
This week meet the fabulously, forward-thinking and inspirational thought leader, Steve Demeter, a Senior Engineering Manager at Google.
What does pride mean to you?
"Being able to take the punches for who you are, only to get back up again and dust yourself off, moving forward stronger because of it."
What makes you feel empowered in the workplace?
"As a gay man who's out at work, in publications, and on the speaking circuit, it's empowering knowing there are people like us who have made it this far as professionals, and knowing that the generations after us can feel an umbrella over their heads because of it."
What can businesses do to empower the LGBTQIA+ community?
"Fund resource groups according to demographics rather than newsworthiness and trend-ability."
Who is your role model, and why?
"I don't know about lifelong role models, but I did shout a big ol "go gurl" recently for Kelly McGillis (Top Gun costar) when asked why she was not asked to return for the sequel: "I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about. I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on, you know, all that other stuff.”
Advice to your younger self?
"Follow your dreams, and apply your creams."
